Tamil (2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), Malayalam (2013) and Odia (2014) are the Classical Languages of India. According to the Ministry of Culture, the Criteria for declaring a language Classic are high antiquity for a period of 1500-2000 years, body of ancient literature considered as valuable heritage, origin literary tradition. Once a language is declared as Classical it will have two major International awards for scholars of eminence, a centre of excellence for studies in that language. Recently, there are demands for declaring Marathi as a Classical Language as it fulfills the criteria. The matter is pending before the Government of India.
