Hormones Promoting Milk Ejection

The hormones responsible for milk ejection or letdown are oxytocin, estrogen, and progesterone. However, during childbirth, there is a decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, which in turn promotes milk ejection.

Role of Estrogen and Progesterone

Estrogen and progesterone are two hormones that play a crucial role in breast development during pregnancy. Estrogen stimulates the growth of milk ducts, while progesterone helps in the formation of milk-producing glands. These hormones also prevent milk production during pregnancy.

During childbirth, the placenta is expelled from the body, which is the main source of estrogen and progesterone. As a result, the levels of these hormones decrease rapidly, which signals the body to start producing milk.

Role of Oxytocin

Oxytocin is the hormone that triggers milk ejection or letdown. It is released from the pituitary gland in response to the stimulation of the nipples during breastfeeding. Oxytocin causes the muscles around the milk-producing glands to contract, pushing the milk towards the nipple, making it available for the baby to feed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, during childbirth, the decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone promotes milk ejection. However, the hormone responsible for milk ejection is oxytocin, which is released in response to the stimulation of the nipples during breastfeeding.
