Agglutination of Sperm:
Fertilizin has the ability to agglutinate (clump together) sperm. It causes the sperm to stick to the surface of the egg, forming a thick layer of sperm around it. This layer helps to prevent polyspermy, i.e., the entry of more than one sperm into the egg. Polyspermy can lead to abnormal development of the embryo and is hence harmful.
Attracts Sperm by Positive Chemotaxis:
Fertilizin also attracts sperm towards the egg by positive chemotaxis. It is a process where the sperm move towards the egg by following a concentration gradient of a chemical substance. Fertilizin acts as a chemoattractant for the sperm, and helps them to reach the egg. This process ensures that only the sperm of the same species reach the egg.
