Explanation:
Oogenesis is the process by which female gametes, known as eggs or ova, are produced in the ovary. It involves a series of events that occur throughout the lifetime of a female individual.

False Statement: Oogenesis continues throughout the life of the individual (Option D)

Explanation:
The statement that oogenesis continues throughout the life of the individual is FALSE. Oogenesis actually begins before birth and is completed by the time a female reaches reproductive age.

Details:
Oogenesis involves the development of ovarian follicles, each containing an oocyte (immature egg cell), within the ovaries. The process begins before birth and progresses through several stages.

1. Formation of Primary Oocytes:
During fetal development, oogonia (primitive germ cells) undergo mitosis to increase their numbers. Some of these oogonia differentiate into primary oocytes, which are arrested in prophase I of meiosis. This process begins before birth and is completed by the time of birth. At birth, each ovary contains about 1-2 million primary oocytes.

2. Activation of Oocytes:
At the onset of puberty, a small number of primary oocytes are activated each month. These activated oocytes undergo further development.

3. Completion of Meiosis I:
During each menstrual cycle, one primary oocyte is selected for further development. The primary oocyte completes meiosis I, resulting in the formation of two daughter cells - a secondary oocyte and a polar body. The secondary oocyte receives most of the cytoplasm and organelles, while the polar body receives a minimal amount. The polar body typically degenerates.

4. Completion of Meiosis II:
If fertilization occurs, the secondary oocyte is released from the ovary and travels through the fallopian tube. It is at this stage that meiosis II is completed, resulting in the formation of a mature egg and another polar body. Only the mature egg is capable of being fertilized.

After the completion of meiosis, the mature egg is released from the ovary during ovulation. If fertilization does not occur, the egg degenerates.

In summary, oogenesis begins before birth, and by the time of birth, all the primary oocytes are already formed. Oogenesis does not continue throughout the life of an individual.
