Causes of Conflict between Nawab Sirajuddaulah and the East India Company:

1. Misuse of Trade Concessions:
The British East India Company had obtained trade concessions from the Mughal Empire to trade in Bengal. However, the Company started misusing these concessions by indulging in illegal trade, smuggling, and evading taxes. This led to a loss of revenue for the Bengal Nawab, who was responsible for collecting taxes.

2. Fortification of Calcutta:
The British East India Company also fortified their factory in Calcutta, which was a violation of the agreement with the Nawab of Bengal. Sirajuddaulah demanded that the fortifications be dismantled, but the British refused to comply.

3. Support for Rival Factions:
The British East India Company supported rival factions in the Bengal court, which created instability and weakened the Nawab's authority. This was done to further the Company's interests and gain leverage in Bengal.

4. Black Hole Incident:
The incident of the Black Hole of Calcutta, where British prisoners were allegedly confined in a small, cramped room and many died due to suffocation and heat, further aggravated the tensions between the Nawab and the Company. Although the incident is controversial, it was used by the British to justify their actions against the Nawab.

Outcome of the Conflict:

The conflict between Nawab Sirajuddaulah and the East India Company resulted in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, where the British emerged victorious with the help of their Indian allies. Sirajuddaulah was captured and executed, and the British gained control over Bengal. This marked the beginning of British colonial rule in India.

Answer c

The conflict between the Bengal nawabs and the East India Company started when the Nawabs refused to grant the Company concessions and demanded large tributes for the Company,s right to trade. The Nawabs also denied the Company any right to mint coins, and stopped it from extending its fortifications.
The Bengal Nawabs accused the Company of deceit, and claimed that the Company was depriving the Bengal government of huge amounts of revenue and undermining the authority of the Nawabs and disrespecting them.
The Company also had its grievances against the Nawabs. It felt that the demands of the Nawabs were unfair and that their trade could flourish only if the duties were removed. The company wanted to enlarge its fortification and build forts. All this led to conflicts between the Bengal Nawabs and the Company.
