The Function of Copper-T as a contraceptive device

Copper-T is a type of intrauterine device (IUD) that is used as a contraceptive method. It is a T-shaped device made of plastic and copper wire that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The function of Copper-T is to prevent fertilization and implantation of the blastocyst by creating a hostile environment in the uterus for sperm and eggs.

Preventing Fertilization

Copper-T works by releasing copper ions into the uterus that disrupt the normal functioning of sperm. The copper ions immobilize or kill the sperm, preventing it from fertilizing an egg. This makes it difficult for the sperm to travel through the fallopian tube and reach the egg for fertilization.

Preventing Implantation

Copper-T also prevents implantation of the blastocyst by changing the lining of the uterus. The copper ions released by the device create an inflammatory response in the uterus, making it difficult for the fertilized egg to implant and grow. This is because the copper ions make the uterus an inhospitable environment for the blastocyst to implant.

Other Functions

Apart from preventing fertilization and implantation, Copper-T also has other functions:

- It thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
- It reduces the motility of the fallopian tubes, making it difficult for the fertilized egg to travel to the uterus.

Conclusion

Copper-T is an effective and long-term contraceptive method that prevents pregnancy by preventing fertilization and implantation of the blastocyst. It is a safe and reliable method of contraception that can be used by women who want to delay or prevent pregnancy.
