What happens when isotonic solution of A (mol.wt.342) and B (mol. wt.60) are put into communication through semipermeable membrane?
  • a)
Transference of solvent from solution A to that of B takes place
  • b)
Transference of solvent from solution B to that of A takes place
  • c)
No transference of solvent from solution A to that of B takes place
  • d)
Change in temperature of solutions takes place
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

What happens when isotonic solution of A (mol.wt.342) and B (mol. wt.6...
Explanation:
When two solutions of different concentrations are separated by a semipermeable membrane, the movement of solvent molecules takes place from the solution of lower concentration to that of higher concentration till the concentration of both the solutions becomes equal. This process is called osmosis.

In this case, solution A has a higher molecular weight than solution B. Therefore, solution A will have a lower concentration of solute particles as compared to solution B.

When the two solutions are put into communication through a semipermeable membrane, the solvent molecules will move from solution B to solution A, as the concentration of solute particles is higher in solution A. This will continue till the concentration of both the solutions becomes equal. Hence, there will be no transference of solvent from solution A to solution B.

Therefore, option C is the correct answer.
