Calculation of Water Equivalent of the Calorimeter

Given data:
- Mass of water = 100gm
- Initial temperature of water = 16°C
- Mass of ice added = 15gm
- Final temperature of the mixture = 4°C

Step 1: Calculation of Heat Lost by Water
- Heat lost by water = Mass of water × Specific heat capacity of water × Change in temperature
- Heat lost by water = 100gm × 1cal/g°C × (16 - 4)°C

Step 2: Calculation of Heat Gained by Ice
- Heat gained by ice = Mass of ice × Latent heat of fusion of ice
- Heat gained by ice = 15gm × 80cal/g

Step 3: Equating the Heat Lost and Heat Gained
- Heat lost by water = Heat gained by ice
- 100 × 1 × (16 - 4) = 15 × 80
- 1200 = 1200

Step 4: Calculation of Water Equivalent of Calorimeter
- Let the water equivalent of the calorimeter be 'W'
- Heat lost by water = Heat gained by calorimeter
- W × Change in temperature = Mass of water × Specific heat capacity of water × Change in temperature
- W = Mass of water × Specific heat capacity of water
- W = 100gm × 1cal/g°C
- W = 100cal
Therefore, the water equivalent of the calorimeter is 100 calories.
