Wobble Hypothesis
The wobble hypothesis explains the flexibility of the third nucleotide in a codon, which can allow for non-standard base pairing. This means that the anticodon of tRNA can recognise more than one codon of mRNA through the wobble base pairing. The wobble base pairing rules are:

- The first two nucleotides in a codon pair strictly with their complementary anticodon nucleotides in tRNA.
- The third nucleotide in a codon can form non-standard base pairs with the first nucleotide in the anticodon of tRNA.

Examples of Wobble Base Pairing
Examples of wobble base pairing include:

- A codon with a G at the third position can pair with a tRNA anticodon that has a U at the first position. This allows for recognition of both GCU and GCC codons by the same tRNA molecule.
- A codon with a U at the third position can pair with a tRNA anticodon that has an A at the third position. This allows for recognition of both UUA and UUG codons by the same tRNA molecule.

Importance of Wobble Hypothesis
The wobble hypothesis allows for a reduction in the number of tRNA molecules needed to recognise all possible codons in the genetic code. Without wobble base pairing, there would need to be 61 different tRNA molecules, one for each possible codon. However, with wobble base pairing, some tRNA molecules can recognise multiple codons, reducing the number of tRNA molecules needed.

The Wobble Hypothesis explains
why multiple codons can code for a single amino acid
. One tRNA molecule (with one amino acid attached) can recognise and bind to more than one codon, due to the less-precise base pairs that can arise between the 3rd base of the codon and the base at the 1st position on the anticodon.
