H3PO4 is a tribasic acid and one of its salt is NaH2PO4 . What volume of 1M NaOH solution should be added to 12g NaH2PO4 to convert it into Na3PO4? (1)100 mL (2) 200 mL (3) 80 mL (4) 300 mL?
Verified Answer
H3PO4 is a tribasic acid and one of its salt is NaH2PO4 . What volume ...
NaH2PO4 + 2NaOH → Na3PO4 + H2O
From the above reaction we can say that,
1 mol of NaH2PO4 reacts with 2mol of NaOH.
Molar mass of NaH2PO4 = 120 g / mol
12g of NaH2PO4 contains = 0.1 mol
So the number of moles of NaOH required = 0.2 mol
Molarity of NaOH = 1M
1 mol = 1000 ml
0.2 mol = ?
So, the volume of 1M NaOH solution = 200 ml

H3PO4 is a tribasic acid and one of its salt is NaH2PO4 . What volume ...
Solution:

Given:
Mass of NaH2PO4 = 12g
Converting NaH2PO4 to Na3PO4 using NaOH

Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction
NaH2PO4 + 2NaOH → Na3PO4 + 2H2O

Step 2: Calculate the number of moles of NaH2PO4
Molar mass of NaH2PO4 = 119.98 g/mol
Number of moles of NaH2PO4 = mass/molar mass = 12/119.98 = 0.1 mol

Step 3: Calculate the number of moles of NaOH required to convert NaH2PO4 to Na3PO4
From the balanced chemical equation, 1 mole of NaH2PO4 reacts with 2 moles of NaOH to form 1 mole of Na3PO4.
Therefore, 0.1 moles of NaH2PO4 will react with 0.2 moles of NaOH.

Step 4: Calculate the volume of 1M NaOH required to provide 0.2 moles of NaOH
Molarity = number of moles/volume in litres
Volume of 1M NaOH = number of moles/molarity = 0.2/1 = 0.2 L = 200 mL

Hence, the volume of 1M NaOH solution required to convert 12g of NaH2PO4 to Na3PO4 is 200 mL.

Answer: (2) 200 mL
