Calculating the Required Resistor Value in a Series String of Diodes

Given Information:

  • Number of diodes in series: 5

  • Individual diode voltage drop: 0.7 V

  • Diode characteristic: 0.1 V/decade

  • Supply voltage: 10 V

  • Total voltage drop across diodes required: 4 V

Calculations:

  • Total voltage drop across diodes: 4 V

  • Individual diode voltage drop: 0.7 V

  • Remaining voltage drop required: 4 - (5 x 0.7) = 0.5 V

  • Using the diode characteristic (0.1 V/decade), the current through the diodes can be found using the following formula:

  • I = 10^((Vd - Vf)/(n x Vt))

  • Where:

    • Vd = total voltage drop across diodes (4 V)

    • Vf = individual diode voltage drop (0.7 V)

    • n = number of diodes (5)

    • Vt = thermal voltage (approx. 26 mV at room temperature)

  • Substituting the values:

  • I = 10^((4 - 0.7)/(5 x 0.026)) = 6.63 mA

  • Using Ohm's Law (V = IR), the required resistor value can be found:

  • R = (Vs - Vd)/I

  • Where:

    • Vs = supply voltage (10 V)

    • Vd = total voltage drop across diodes (4 V)

    • I = current through diodes (6.63 mA)

  • Substituting the values:

  • R = (10 - 4)/0.00663 = 903.93 ohms

  • Rounding off to the nearest preferred value (1 kohm): 1 kohm

Conclusion:

The required resistor value to establish a total voltage drop of 4 V across a series string of 5 diodes with a 0.7 V drop and a 0.1 V/decade characteristic connected to a 10 V supply is 1 kohm.
