Impact extrusion is used for making the collapsible tubes so that they can be used for accommodating or holding the liquids and the pastes
What are the other types of Extrusion?
Extrusion is classified in general into four types. They are Direct extrusion, indirect extrusion, impact extrusion, and hydrostatic extrusion.
Direct extrusion, also called forward extrusion, is when the billet moves along the same direction as the ram and punch do. The sliding of the billet is against a stationary container wall. Friction between the container and billet is high.
Indirect extrusion (backward extrusion) is a process in which a punch moves opposite to that of the billet. Here there is no relative motion between container and billet. Hence, there is less friction, and hence reduced forces are required for indirect extrusion.
In hydrostatic extrusion, the container is filled with fluid. Extrusion pressure is transmitted through the fluid to the billet. Friction is eliminated in this process because there is no contact between the billet and container wall.
Impact extrusion: Hollow sections such as cups, toothpaste containers are made by impact extrusion. It is a variation of indirect extrusion. The punch is made to strike the slug at high speed by impact load. Tubes of small wall thickness can be produced. Usually, metals like copper, aluminium, lead are impact extruded.

Collapsible toothpaste tubes are manufactured bya)Direct extrusionb)P...
Collapsible toothpaste tubes are manufactured using a process called impact extrusion. This process involves the transformation of a solid metal billet into a hollow tube by subjecting it to a series of high-impact forces. The metal billet is placed in a die, which is then struck by a punch at a high velocity. This punch exerts a tremendous amount of force on the billet, causing it to deform and take on the shape of the die cavity.

The process of impact extrusion can be further explained with the help of the following points:

1. Metal billet preparation:
- A metal billet, typically made of aluminum or tin-plated steel, is prepared for the manufacturing process.
- The billet is cut into the desired length, depending on the size of the toothpaste tube to be produced.

2. Die and punch setup:
- A die, made of hardened steel, is prepared with the desired shape and size of the toothpaste tube.
- The die is placed in a machine equipped with a punch, which is also made of hardened steel.
- The punch is aligned with the die to ensure accurate shaping of the tube.

3. Impact extrusion process:
- The metal billet is placed in the die, and the machine is activated.
- The punch rapidly strikes the billet with a high amount of force, causing it to flow and take on the shape of the die cavity.
- The metal is compressed and pushed against the die walls, resulting in a hollow tube formation.
- The force exerted by the punch is precisely controlled to achieve the desired wall thickness of the tube.

4. Tube finishing:
- After the impact extrusion process, the tube may undergo additional manufacturing steps, such as trimming and necking.
- Trimming involves removing excess metal from the ends of the tube to achieve the desired length.
- Necking refers to the process of narrowing down the tube opening to facilitate easy dispensing of toothpaste.

In conclusion, collapsible toothpaste tubes are manufactured using the impact extrusion process. This method allows for the efficient production of hollow tubes with precise dimensions and wall thickness. The resulting tubes are durable, lightweight, and easy to use, making them ideal for packaging toothpaste and other similar products.
