At a point ‘O’ on a metal sheet a square OABC of a unit side length is drawn. The square
undergoes a small uniform elastic deformation and deforms to OA*B*C* (dashed lines) as shown
in the figure. All dimensions are in mm and the figure is not to scale. The normal strains εx ,  εy
and shear strain γxy developed in the square respectively are
  • a)
    -0.0020,0.0025and0.0020
  • b)
    0.0020,0.0025and0.0020
  • c)
    0.0025,0.0020 and 0.0020
  • d)
    -0.0020,0.0025 and 0.0020
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

The point is to find ex, ey and shear strain, we have to solve the problem by dividing into 3 parts

step1:- find ex
since the square plate is shortened by 0.002mm in X direction ex=0.002/1 . ' . ex=-0.002 ( negative ,since it's shortened).

step 2:- find ey
since the square plate is elongated by 0.0025mm in y direction ey=0.0025/1 . ' . ey=0.0025 ( here it's positive).

step 3:- find shear strain
here, the square plate is distorted in both directions

#for a positive face positive direction forces, it's

shear strain =0.001/1 .'. shear strain =+0.001.

#for positive face negative direction forces, it's

shear strain=0.003/1 .'. shear strain=-0.003( reason for negative is above sentence).

so total strain = -0.002

so the option is d.)
