Problem: Seven people, P, Q, R, S, T, W and X sitting in a straight line facing north, not necessarily in the same order. R sits at one of the extreme ends of the line. T has as many people sitting on his right, as on his left. S sits third to the left of X. Q sits on the immediate left of Q does not sit at any of the extreme ends of the line.

Solution:

  • We need to arrange 7 persons P, Q, R, S, T, W, and X in a straight line facing north.

  • We need to find the position of each person based on the given conditions.

Step 1: Fix the position of R

  • Given, R sits at one of the extreme ends of the line.

  • So, there are two possible positions for R – either extreme left or extreme right.

Step 2: Fix the position of T

  • Given, T has as many people sitting on his right, as on his left.

  • So, T must be sitting in the middle of the line, i.e., the 4th position.

Step 3: Fix the position of S

  • Given, S sits third to the left of X.

  • So, the possible positions for S are 1st or 2nd position.

  • But S cannot be in the 1st position as R is already sitting at one of the extreme ends.

  • So, S must be in the 2nd position.

  • Therefore, the position of X must be the 5th position.

Step 4: Fix the position of Q

  • Given, Q sits on the immediate left of Q does not sit at any of the extreme ends of the line.

  • So, Q cannot be in the 1st or 2nd position.

  • Since T is in the middle, Q cannot be in the 6th or 7th position either.

  • So, Q must be in the 3rd position and P must be in the 6th position.

Therefore, the final arrangement is as follows:
R _ _ T S X Q P
