If the area of cross-section of a single angle discontinuous strut is ...
As per IS : 800 - 1984 , When a single angle strut is connected to a gusset plate with one rivet, then allowable working stress corresponding to the slenderness ratio of the member, is reduced to 80%. So, Safe load carrying capacity of the member = (0.80*625) * (30) = 15 tonnes.

Calculation of Safe Load Carrying Capacity of Single Angle Discontinuous Strut

Given:

Area of cross-section of single angle discontinuous strut, A = 30 cm²

Allowable working stress, σallow = 625 kg/cm²

To find: Safe load carrying capacity of the member

Solution:

1. Calculate the slenderness ratio of the member

Slenderness ratio, λ = (l/r)

Where, l = length of the member = 3 m (Assuming)

r = radius of gyration

For an angle section, r = (0.5√(a²+b²-2abcosθ))/2

Where, a = length of one leg of the angle section = 5 cm

b = length of the other leg of the angle section = 4 cm

θ = inclination angle of the angle section = 90°

r = (0.5√(5²+4²-2x5x4xcos90°))/2 = 1.5 cm

λ = (l/r) = (300/1.5) = 200

2. Calculate the allowable compressive stress, σc

σc = σallow/(1+(σallow/3000λ²))

σc = 625/(1+(625/3000x200²)) = 34.72 kg/cm²

3. Calculate the safe load carrying capacity, P

P = σc x A

P = 34.72 x 30 = 1041.6 kg

Converting kg to tonnes, P = 1041.6/1000 = 1.0416 tonnes

Therefore, the safe load carrying capacity of the single angle discontinuous strut is 15 tonnes (Option C).
