Read the below passage and answer the following question:
Fossils are formed layer by layer in a sequence. It is a slow process that is totally dependent on where the organism dies. In the ocean, fossils are settled at the bottom in the soil or sand. In the course of time, these layers changed into rocks due to the presence of the water above and also due to chemical reactions. The distribution pattern of fossils shows that the ancient fossils present in the bottom rocks are simple, while the most recent fossils found in the upper strata are highly evolved. It means fossils form and become more and more complex as we proceed from earliest to recent rocks.
Q. Which of the following constitutes a fossil?
  • a)
A mineralized burrow of an extinct animal
  • b)
An unidentified animal found frozen in a glacier
  • c)
An ant found inside a block of amber, dating back to 110 million years
  • d)
    All of the above
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Read the below passage and answer the following question:Fossils are ...
Fossils are dead remains of animals and plants from the remote past.
Fossils are formed when dead organisms are not completely decomposed. The organisms may get trapped in resins of trees, lava of volcanoes or hot mud, which when hardened retains the animal’s parts thus forming fossils.

Read the below passage and answer the following question:Fossils are ...
Fossils are remnants or traces of ancient organisms that have been preserved in the Earth's crust. They are formed through a slow process that occurs over millions of years. Fossils can provide valuable information about the history of life on Earth and the evolution of different species. In this passage, the formation of fossils and their distribution pattern are discussed.

Formation of Fossils:
Fossils are formed layer by layer in a sequence. When an organism dies, its remains can be preserved under certain conditions. In the ocean, for example, the remains settle at the bottom in the soil or sand. Over time, these layers of sediment can undergo various changes, such as compaction and cementation, which turn them into rocks. The presence of water and chemical reactions also contribute to this process. As a result, the remains of the organism become fossilized within the rock.

Distribution Pattern of Fossils:
The distribution pattern of fossils provides insights into the evolution of life on Earth. The passage states that ancient fossils found in the bottom rocks are simple, while more recent fossils found in the upper strata are highly evolved. This suggests that fossils become more complex as we move from earlier to more recent rocks.

Examples of Fossils:
The passage mentions three examples of fossils:

a) A mineralized burrow of an extinct animal: A burrow is a hole or tunnel created by an animal for shelter or protection. When the animal dies, its burrow can become fossilized through the process of mineralization. This means that the minerals in the surrounding sediment replace the organic material of the burrow, preserving its shape and structure.

b) An unidentified animal found frozen in a glacier: When an animal becomes trapped in ice, such as a glacier, it can be preserved in a frozen state. This type of preservation is known as natural freezing. The frozen animal can remain intact for thousands or even millions of years, providing valuable information about past ecosystems.

c) An ant found inside a block of amber, dating back to 110 million years: Amber is fossilized tree resin that can preserve organisms trapped inside it. When a small organism, such as an ant, becomes trapped in sticky resin, it can get preserved within the amber as it hardens over time. This type of preservation provides a detailed and three-dimensional view of the organism.

In summary, fossils are formed through a slow process of layering and mineralization. They can be found in different types of rocks and provide evidence of ancient life forms. The examples mentioned in the passage illustrate the different ways in which organisms can be preserved as fossils.
