Mendeleev was a Russian chemist, who contributed the most for the development of periodic table of elements wherein the elements were arranged on the basis of their fundamental property, the atomic mass and also on the similarity of chemical properties. Only 63 elements were known at his time. He arranged the 63 elements in the increasing order of their atomic masses and found that there was a periodic recurrence of elements with similar physical and chemical properties. He observed that elements with similar properties fall in the same vertical column. These vertical columns are called groups and horizontal rows of elements are called periods. Mendeleev predicted the existence of certain elements not known at that time and named two of them as Eka-silicon and Eka-aluminium.
Q. Mendeleev arranged the periodic table on the basis of their fundamental property:
  • a)
    Atomic mass
  • b)
    Atomic number
  • c)
    Number of neutrons
  • d)
    Valence electrons
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Atomic Mass as the Fundamental Property
- Mendeleev arranged the periodic table based on the fundamental property of atomic mass.
- He observed that elements with similar physical and chemical properties fall in the same vertical column.
- The vertical columns are called groups and the horizontal rows are called periods.
Significance of Atomic Mass
- The atomic mass of an element is the average mass of one atom of that element, taking into account all its isotopes.
- It is an important property as it helps in determining the arrangement of elements in the periodic table.
- Elements with similar atomic masses tend to exhibit similar chemical properties.
- This allows for the grouping of elements with similar properties in the same column, making it easier to understand and predict the behavior of elements.
Contribution of Mendeleev
- Mendeleev's arrangement of elements based on atomic mass led to the development of the periodic table.
- He was able to predict the existence of unknown elements and their properties based on the gaps in the table.
- For example, he predicted the existence of Eka-silicon and Eka-aluminium which were later discovered and named as germanium and gallium respectively.
- His work laid the foundation for the modern periodic table and helped in organizing and understanding the properties of elements.
