Lactational Amenorrhea

Lactational amenorrhea is a temporary family planning method that occurs when a woman is not menstruating and fully breastfeeding. It is a contraceptive method where the mother is informed and supported in how to use breastfeeding for contraception. As breastfeeding delays the return of a mother’s ovulation and may make her infertile for six months or more.

Hormone responsible for lactational amenorrhea

The hormone responsible for lactational amenorrhea is prolactin induced inhibition of GnRH. GnRH is gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which is released from the hypothalamus and stimulates the pituitary gland to release follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones are responsible for the development of ovarian follicles and the release of an egg from the ovary.

Mechanism of action

During lactation, the high levels of prolactin in the mother's body inhibit the release of GnRH from the hypothalamus. This, in turn, inhibits the release of FSH and LH from the pituitary gland, which prevents the development of ovarian follicles and the release of an egg from the ovary. As a result, lactational amenorrhea occurs, and the mother remains infertile.

Duration of lactational amenorrhea

The duration of lactational amenorrhea varies from woman to woman. However, it is generally considered a reliable contraceptive method for the first six months after delivery, as long as the mother is exclusively breastfeeding, and her menstrual cycle has not returned.

Advantages of lactational amenorrhea

Some of the advantages of lactational amenorrhea as a contraceptive method are:

- It is a natural and non-invasive method of family planning.
- It can be used immediately after delivery, without any additional effort or cost.
- It provides a natural and healthy source of nutrition for the baby.
- It helps to strengthen the bond between the mother and the baby.

In conclusion, lactational amenorrhea is a temporary family planning method that occurs when a woman is not menstruating and fully breastfeeding. Prolactin induced inhibition of GnRH is responsible for lactational amenorrhea. It is a natural and non-invasive method of family planning that provides several advantages, including a natural and healthy source of nutrition for the baby and a strengthened bond between the mother and the baby.
