Reason: The fertile leaves of the shoot become modified into microsporophylls and magasporophylls which bear ovules and anthers respectively.
  • a)
Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of assertion (A).
  • b)
Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A).
  • c)

A flower is a modified condensed shoot specialised to carry out the function of sexual reproduction in angiosperms. Like a branch, it arises in the axil of a small leaf like structure called bract. The receptacle (thalamus or torus) of a flower supports all the floral appendages (i.e., sepals, petals, stamens and carpels). The receptacle consists of several crowded nodes which are separated by condensed internodes. The fertile leaves of the shoot become microsporophylls (stamens) and megasporo phylls ( carpels) which bear anthers and ovules respectively. The anthers produce pollen grains and the ovules possess eggs.

Assertion Analysis
The assertion states that an angiospermous flower represents a modified condensed shoot which performs the function of sexual reproduction. This is a correct statement as flowers are indeed specialized reproductive structures of angiosperms (flowering plants).
Reason Analysis
The reason provided claims that the fertile leaves of the shoot become modified into microsporophylls and megasporophylls, which bear ovules and anthers, respectively. While it is true that the floral structures are modified leaves, the terminology used is not entirely accurate. Microsporophylls and megasporophylls are not standard terms used in angiosperm classification; instead, we refer to them as stamens (which produce pollen) and carpels (which contain ovules).
Conclusion
- The assertion (A) is true since flowers do function as reproductive organs in angiosperms.
- The reason (R) is misleading; although it contains elements of truth regarding floral structure, the terminology is incorrect, making it false.
Therefore, the correct answer is option 'C': Assertion (A) is true, but reason (R) is false.
Key Takeaway
- Angiosperm flowers serve as reproductive structures.
- The classification of floral parts is more complex than stated, leading to the inaccuracy in the reason.
