Read the following passage and answer the questions.
During extraction of metals, electrolytic refining is used to obtain pure metals. During the process, the impure metal is made the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. The solution of the metal salt is used as an electrolyte. On passing the current through the electrolyte, the pure metal from the anode dissolves from the electrolyte. An equivalent of pure metal from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode.
The process of purification of the metal obtained after reduction, is called:
  • a)
    Extraction
  • b)
    Refining
  • c)
    Froth floatation
  • d)
    Electrolysis
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Extractive metallurgy is the practice of removing valuable metals from an ore and refining the extracted raw metals into a purer form. Hydrometallurgy uses aqueous solutions to extract metals from ores (leaching). Pyrometallurgy involves high temperature processes where chemical reactions take place.

Refining of Metals through Electrolysis

Introduction:
During the extraction of metals, impurities are often present in the obtained metal. To obtain pure metals, the process of electrolytic refining is used. This process involves the use of an electrolyte and passing an electric current through it.

The Process:
During electrolytic refining, the impure metal is made the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. The metal salt solution is used as an electrolyte. The following steps occur during the process:

1. Anode: The impure metal is made the anode. It is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply. As a result, the impure metal dissolves into the electrolyte.

2. Cathode: A thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. It is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. As the current passes through the electrolyte, an equivalent amount of pure metal from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode.

3. Electrolyte: The metal salt solution serves as the electrolyte. It provides the medium for the flow of ions during the process. The metal ions from the anode dissolve into the electrolyte and are transported to the cathode.

4. Deposition of Pure Metal: As the current passes through the electrolyte, the metal ions from the anode move towards the cathode. At the cathode, these metal ions gain electrons and are reduced to form pure metal atoms. These atoms are then deposited on the cathode, resulting in the purification of the metal.

Purification of the Metal:
The process of purifying the metal obtained after reduction is called refining. In this case, the impure metal obtained through extraction is subjected to electrolytic refining, which helps in obtaining pure metals. The impurities present in the metal are left behind in the anode, while the pure metal is deposited on the cathode. This process ensures that the final metal obtained is of high purity.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'B' - Refining.
