Read the following passage and answer the questions.

During extraction of metals, electrolytic refining is used to obtain pure metals. During the process, the impure metal is made the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. The solution of the metal salt is used as an electrolyte. On passing the current through the electrolyte, the pure metal from the anode dissolves from the electrolyte. An equivalent of pure metal from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode.

Anode is _______electrode while cathode is ---------electrode:

Choose the correct option.

  • a)
    Positive, Negative

  • b)
    Reducing, Oxidising

  • c)

Answer:

The process of electrolytic refining is used during the extraction of metals to obtain pure metals. In this process, impure metal is made the anode, and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. The solution of the metal salt is used as an electrolyte. On passing the current through the electrolyte, the pure metal from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte while an equivalent of pure metal from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode.

Anode and Cathode:
- Anode is the electrode where oxidation occurs. It is the positive electrode during electrolysis.
- Cathode is the electrode where reduction occurs. It is the negative electrode during electrolysis.

Hence, the correct answer is option 'C', which states that the anode is the positive electrode (negative) and the cathode is the negative electrode (positive).

Explanation:
During electrolytic refining, the impure metal is made the anode. When an electric current is passed through the electrolyte, the metal atoms from the anode start dissolving into the electrolyte as positively charged ions. This process is known as oxidation. As a result, the impurities present in the metal remain behind in the anode.

At the same time, a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. The pure metal ions from the electrolyte are attracted to the cathode due to the opposite charge. These metal ions gain electrons at the cathode and get reduced, forming pure metal atoms. These pure metal atoms then get deposited on the cathode, resulting in the formation of a pure metal layer.

The metal salt solution used as the electrolyte provides the necessary ions for the process. It completes the circuit and allows the flow of electric current between the anode and cathode.

Overall, electrolytic refining is an important process in the extraction of metals as it helps in obtaining pure metals by separating impurities from the desired metal.
