The presence of entrained air in concrete results in:i) Reduced bleedi...
Entrained air is defined as the small bubbles of air that are intentionally introduced in concrete during mixing. The presence of entrained air in concrete has both positive and negative effects on its properties.

Effects of entrained air in concrete:

1. Reduced Bleeding:
When concrete is poured, water tends to rise to the surface and form a layer of water known as bleed water. Entrained air in concrete reduces bleeding by acting as a barrier to water migration, thereby reducing the amount of bleed water.

2. Lowering Density of Concrete:
Entrained air lowers the density of concrete. This can be beneficial in some applications where lower density is desired, such as in lightweight concrete.

3. Decrease in Strength at all Ages:
Entrained air can decrease the strength of concrete at all ages. The air voids act as stress concentrators and can result in cracking and reduced strength.

Conclusion:

From the above discussion, it is evident that the presence of entrained air in concrete has both positive and negative effects on its properties. While it can reduce bleeding and lower the density of concrete, it can also decrease its strength. Therefore, the amount of entrained air should be carefully controlled to achieve the desired properties of concrete.
