In March 2017, the "world's largest artificial sun" was switched on in Germany. The artificial sun, also known as the "Synlight" experiment, was developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Julich, Germany.

The Synlight experiment uses 149 high-power xenon lamps to simulate the sun's rays and create temperatures of up to 3,500 degrees Celsius (6,332 degrees Fahrenheit). It is used to study the potential of hydrogen as a fuel source and to develop new materials for use in space travel.
