Explanation:

When we talk about chromosomes, the centromere is the point where the two chromatids are attached. Based on the placement of the centromere, chromosomes can be classified into four different types:

1. Metacentric chromosomes:
- The centromere is located in the middle of the chromosome.
- The two arms of the chromosome are equal in length.
- Example: Chromosome 1 in humans.

2. Sub-metacentric chromosomes:
- The centromere is located slightly off-center.
- One arm of the chromosome is shorter than the other.
- Example: Chromosome 16 in humans.

3. Acrocentric chromosomes:
- The centromere is located very close to one end of the chromosome.
- One arm of the chromosome is very short.
- Example: Chromosome 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22 in humans.

4. Telocentric chromosomes:
- The centromere is located at the very end of the chromosome.
- Only one arm of the chromosome is visible.
- Example: None in humans.

Therefore, when the centromere is situated in the middle of two equal arms of chromosomes, the chromosome is referred to as metacentric. Hence, the correct answer is option C - metacentric.
