Verified Answer
If mammalian ovum fails to get fertilized, which one of the following ...
Progesterone suspends ovulation during pregnancy, maintains foetal connection with the uterine wall and controls development of foetus in the uterus.

If fertilization fails, means no pregnancy so progesterone level decreases to restart the process of ovulation.

So, the correct answer is 'Progesterone secretion rapidly increases'.

If mammalian ovum fails to get fertilized, which one of the following ...
Explanation:

If the mammalian ovum fails to get fertilized, the following events are likely to happen:

Corpus luteum will disintegrate: Corpus luteum is formed from the remnants of the follicle after ovulation. Its primary function is to secrete hormones, primarily progesterone, which is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum will disintegrate and form a scar tissue called corpus albicans.

Progesterone secretion rapidly declines: Progesterone is the primary hormone secreted by the corpus luteum. Its secretion is essential for the preparation of the endometrium for implantation of the fertilized ovum. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum will disintegrate, and progesterone secretion will rapidly decline.

Estrogen secretion further decreases: Estrogen is secreted by the developing follicles in the ovary. Its secretion is essential for the proliferation of the endometrium and the preparation for implantation. After ovulation, the corpus luteum secretes estrogen in smaller amounts. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum will disintegrate, and estrogen secretion will further decrease.

Primary follicle starts developing: After the disintegration of the corpus luteum, the levels of estrogen and progesterone decline. This decline signals the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland to start the development of a new follicle, which will eventually mature and ovulate in the next cycle.

Therefore, the unlikely event in this scenario is the further decrease in estrogen secretion as it is expected to decrease after the disintegration of the corpus luteum.
