Depth of water = 60cm
Effective rainfall = 15 cm
Depth of irrigating water = 60 – 15 = 45 cm
⇒ Delta = 45 cm = 0.45 m
B = 15 days
From relation, ∆= 8.64×B/D
⇒ Duty(D) = 8.64×15/0.45 = 288ha/cumec
Due to loss of water, duty at head of channel is reduced
Here losses are 15%
So, duty at head of channel = 288 × 85/100
= 244.80 ha/cumecs

Command area of the channel = 4000 hectares
Intensity of irrigation of a crop = 70%
Water required for the crop = 60 cm in 15 days
Effective rainfall during the period = 15 cm
Total losses assumed = 15%

To find: Duty at the head of the channel in ha/cumec

Calculation:
1. Net water requirement for the crop = Water required - Effective rainfall
= 60 - 15
= 45 cm

2. Conversion of cm to m
45 cm = 0.45 m

3. Total water to be supplied to the crop
= Net water requirement / Intensity of irrigation
= 0.45 / 0.7
= 0.6429 m

4. Total water to be supplied to the command area
= Total water to be supplied to the crop + Total losses
= 0.6429 / (1 - 0.15)
= 0.7564 m

5. Time period for the water supply
= 15 days

6. Volume of water required for the command area
= Total water to be supplied to the command area * Area * Time
= 0.7564 * 4000 * 15
= 45384 cubic meters

7. Duty at the head of the channel
= Command area / Volume of water required
= 4000 / 45384
= 0.088 ha/cumec

8. Conversion of ha/cumec to m³/s
0.088 ha/cumec = 0.088 * 10000 / 86400 m³/s
= 0.010185 m³/s

Therefore, the duty at the head of the channel is 244.80 ha/cumec.
