Leaching Requirement and Consumptive Use Requirement

Leaching requirement is the amount of water needed to be applied to the soil to remove soluble salts and prevent soil salinity. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the applied water.

Consumptive use requirement is the amount of water needed by the crop to satisfy its evapotranspiration needs. It is the sum of water lost by evaporation from the soil and transpiration from the plant.

Calculation

Given:

Leaching requirement = 10%

Consumptive use requirement = 90 mm

To calculate the depth of water required to be applied to the field, we need to consider both the leaching requirement and the consumptive use requirement.

Leaching requirement = 10% of applied water

Consumptive use requirement = evapotranspiration (ET) = water lost by evaporation from the soil + water lost by transpiration from the plant

Total water requirement = leaching requirement + consumptive use requirement

Total water requirement = 10% of applied water + 90 mm

Total water requirement = 0.1 * applied water + 90 mm

We can rearrange the equation to get the depth of water required to be applied to the field:

Depth of water = (total water requirement) / (field area)
