Verified Answer
Tidal Volume and Expiratory Reserve Volume of an athlete is 500 mL and...
Expiratory capacity is the total volume of air a person can expire after normal inspiration. It includes tidal volume and expiratory reserve volume.
EC = TV + ERV = 500 + 1000 = 1500 mL

Tidal Volume and Expiratory Reserve Volume of an athlete is 500 mL and...
Given data:
Tidal volume (TV) = 500 mL
Expiratory reserve volume (ERV) = 1000 mL
Residual volume (RV) = 1200 mL

Expiratory capacity (EC) represents the maximum amount of air that can be exhaled after a normal inhalation. It is the sum of tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and expiratory reserve volume.

So,
EC = TV + IRV + ERV

Here, IRV (inspiratory reserve volume) is not given, but we can calculate it using the formula:
IRV = VC - (TV + ERV + RV)
where VC (vital capacity) = TV + IRV + ERV + RV

VC = TV + IRV + ERV + RV
VC = 500 + IRV + 1000 + 1200
VC = 2700 mL

IRV = VC - (TV + ERV + RV)
IRV = 2700 - (500 + 1000 + 1200)
IRV = 1000 mL

Now, substituting the values in the formula of EC:
EC = TV + IRV + ERV
EC = 500 + 1000 + 1000
EC = 2500 mL

Therefore, the expiratory capacity of the athlete is 2500 mL, which is option B.
