Limiting Reagent and Calculation of HCl formed in the reaction:

Given: 100 g of hydrogen (H2) and 100 g of chlorine (CI2) are mixed for the formation of HCl gas.

Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction.
H2 + CI2 → 2HCl

Step 2: Find the molar mass of each substance.
Molar mass of H2 = 2 g/mol
Molar mass of CI2 = 71 g/mol

Step 3: Calculate the number of moles of each substance.
Number of moles of H2 = 100 g / 2 g/mol = 50 moles
Number of moles of CI2 = 100 g / 71 g/mol = 1.41 moles

Step 4: Determine the limiting reagent.
The limiting reagent is the reactant that gets used up first and limits the amount of product formed. To determine the limiting reagent, we compare the number of moles of each substance with the mole ratio in the balanced equation.

From the balanced equation, we can see that 1 mole of CI2 reacts with 1 mole of H2 to form 2 moles of HCl. Therefore, 1.41 moles of CI2 would require 1.41 moles of H2 to react completely. However, we only have 50 moles of H2, which is not enough to react with all of the CI2. Therefore, H2 is the limiting reagent.

To calculate the amount of product formed, we use the mole ratio from the balanced equation.

From the balanced equation, we know that 1 mole of CI2 reacts with 1 mole of H2 to form 2 moles of HCl. Since H2 is the limiting reagent, we can only form as much HCl as the amount that can be formed from 50 moles of H2.

Number of moles of HCl formed = 50 moles of H2 x (2 moles of HCl / 1 mole of H2) = 100 moles of HCl

Mass of HCl formed = Number of moles of HCl x Molar mass of HCl
= 100 moles x 36.5 g/mol = 3650 g = 3.65 kg
