Which of the following statements is not correct?
  • a)
Oxygen molecule is paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons
  • b)
Sulphur shows maximum covalency of four
  • c)
Ozone can be easily detected by mercury
  • d)
Both sulphurous and sulphuric acid are dibasic in nature
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Which of the following statements is not correct?a)Oxygen molecule is ...
Covelency of an atom is the number of covalent bonds that it can form.
While we are finding the maximum covalency of any element  we should check the group of that element in the periodic table.
As sulphur is the element of 16 group elements, so it's maximum covalency is 6 and also in its excited state it has 6 unpaired electrons thus it’s  maximum covalency is 6.EX: In SF6 the maximum valency is 6.

Which of the following statements is not correct?a)Oxygen molecule is ...
Explanation:
The correct statement is option 'B' which states that sulphur shows maximum covalency of four. This statement is not correct because sulphur can actually exhibit a covalency of more than four.

Paramagnetism of Oxygen Molecule:
Oxygen molecule (O2) consists of two oxygen atoms. Each oxygen atom has six valence electrons. In the ground state, these electrons are distributed in the molecular orbitals. The molecular orbital diagram for oxygen molecule shows that there are two unpaired electrons in the π*2p antibonding molecular orbital. This makes oxygen molecule paramagnetic.

Detection of Ozone by Mercury:
Ozone (O3) is a pale blue gas with a strong odor. It can be easily detected by the reaction with mercury. When ozone reacts with mercury, it forms a reddish-brown compound called mercury(II) oxide (HgO). This reaction is used to detect the presence of ozone.

Dibasic Nature of Sulphurous and Sulphuric Acid:
Sulphurous acid (H2SO3) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) are both acids that contain sulfur. Sulphurous acid is derived from sulfur dioxide (SO2) while sulphuric acid is derived from sulfur trioxide (SO3). Both acids are capable of donating two protons (H+) per molecule, which makes them dibasic in nature.

Covalency of Sulphur:
Sulphur can form compounds in which it exhibits a covalency greater than four. For example, in sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), sulphur forms six covalent bonds with six fluorine atoms. Each fluorine atom shares one electron with sulphur, resulting in a total of twelve valence electrons around sulphur. This exceeds the octet rule and demonstrates that sulphur can have a covalency greater than four.

In conclusion, the statement that sulphur shows maximum covalency of four is not correct. Sulphur can exhibit a covalency greater than four, as seen in compounds like SF6.
