Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium. Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It spreads through sexual contact, common toilets and under-clothes. Gonorrhoea affects both male and female genitals. The bacterium lives in genital tubes, produces pus-containing discharge, pain around genitalia and burning sensation during urination. It damages the eyes of babies born to infected mothers.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It mainly affects the mucous membranes of the urinogenital tract in both males and females. In males, it primarily affects the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body, while in females, it can affect the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
Symptoms of Gonorrhoea in Males:
- Burning sensation while passing urine
- Yellow discharge from the penis
- Swelling or pain in the testicles
- Painful or swollen glands in the groin area
- Fever, headache, and feeling of illness
Symptoms of Gonorrhoea in Females:
- Pain or burning sensation while passing urine
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Bleeding between periods
- Painful sexual intercourse
- Abdominal pain and fever
Treatment and Prevention:
Gonorrhoea can be treated with antibiotics, but it is important to complete the entire course of medication to ensure complete recovery. It is also important to abstain from sexual activity until the infection is completely treated to avoid spreading it to others. Practicing safe sex, such as using condoms and getting regular STI screenings, can help prevent the spread of Gonorrhoea and other STIs.
