In male cockroach, the junction of vasa defferentia and the ejaculatory duct is surrounded by a characterstick mushroom gland; lying in the 6th-7th abdominal segments. Its secretion provides nourishment to the sperms and forms the innermost layer of spermatophore. Cockroach excretes uric acid, therefore it is uricotelic. Blood from sinuses enter 68
heart through ostia and is pumped anteriorly to sinuses again. In cockroach, excretion is done by Malpighian tubules. In addition, the fat body, neohrocytes and uricose glands also help in excretion.

Read the following statements about cockroach(i) In male cockroach, a ...
The correct answer is option 'A' which includes statements (i), (ii), and (iv).

(i) In male cockroaches, a characteristic mushroom-shaped gland is present in the 6th and 7th abdominal segments which functions as an accessory reproductive gland. This gland is called the mushroom-shaped gland or the mushroom body. It produces a secretion that is involved in the reproductive process.

(ii) Cockroaches are uricotelic, which means they excrete nitrogenous waste in the form of uric acid. Uric acid is a relatively insoluble compound and requires less water for its excretion. This adaptation helps cockroaches conserve water in their arid habitats.

(iii) The fat body and uricose glands in cockroaches are glandular in function. The fat body is a specialized tissue responsible for the storage and metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. It also plays a role in detoxification and immune responses. The uricose glands are responsible for the synthesis and excretion of uric acid.

(iv) The blood in cockroaches circulates through sinuses instead of blood vessels. The sinuses are open spaces or cavities within the body where the internal organs are bathed in hemolymph, which is the cockroach's equivalent of blood. The hemolymph flows into the heart through ostia, which are small openings in the heart wall. The heart then pumps the hemolymph anteriorly back into the sinuses.

Therefore, statements (i), (ii), and (iv) are correct. Statement (iii) is incorrect as the fat body and uricose glands are not glandular in function.
