One of Kolkata’s historical monuments, Fort William was built during the time of the Bengal Presidency. Named after William III, the fort sits on the banks of the Hooghly River and was at the centre of the Battle of Plassey fought between the British and the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah. It is also the site of an infamous dungeon called the Black Hole of Calcutta (the city of Kolkata was erstwhile known as Calcutta).

Black Hole Tragedy is associated with the Battle of Plassey.

Explanation:
- The Battle of Plassey was fought on 23rd June 1757 between the forces of the British East India Company and the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula.
- The British forces were led by Robert Clive and the Indian forces were led by Mir Jafar.
- The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the British and marked the beginning of British dominance in India.
- However, the Battle of Plassey is also associated with the infamous Black Hole Tragedy.
- After the battle, Siraj-ud-Daula was captured and imprisoned in the Fort William in Calcutta.
- On the night of 20th June 1756, 146 British prisoners were put into a small room in the fort, which came to be known as the Black Hole.
- The room had only two small windows and no ventilation, and the prisoners were kept there overnight in extreme heat and humidity.
- By the morning, only 23 prisoners had survived, while the rest had died due to suffocation and heatstroke.
- The incident caused outrage in Britain and led to the Company taking revenge by defeating Siraj-ud-Daula at the Battle of Plassey the following year.
- The Black Hole Tragedy is considered a symbol of British brutality and callousness towards Indian lives during their rule in India.
