PTH (parathyroid hormone) is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck. It plays a crucial role in regulating calcium levels in the body. PTH has several functions, but one of them is not reducing calcium ion reabsorption from digested food.

Functions of PTH:

1. Increases calcium ion level in blood: PTH has the primary function of increasing the level of calcium ions in the blood. It does this by stimulating calcium release from the bones, where it is stored, into the bloodstream. This process is known as bone resorption.

2. Stimulates reabsorption of calcium ions in kidneys: PTH also acts on the kidneys, stimulating the reabsorption of calcium ions from the urine back into the bloodstream. This helps to conserve calcium and prevent its loss through urine.

3. Stimulates demineralization: PTH plays a role in demineralization, which is the process of breaking down bone tissue to release calcium ions into the bloodstream. When blood calcium levels are low, PTH is released to stimulate the breakdown of bone tissue and release calcium ions.

4. Inhibits reabsorption of phosphate ions in kidneys: PTH has an inverse relationship with phosphate levels in the blood. When PTH levels are high, phosphate reabsorption in the kidneys is reduced, leading to increased excretion of phosphate in the urine. This helps to maintain a balance between calcium and phosphate levels in the body.

5. Stimulates the production of active vitamin D: PTH stimulates the synthesis of active vitamin D in the kidneys. Active vitamin D plays a crucial role in enhancing the absorption of calcium from the intestines, ensuring an adequate supply of calcium for the body.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A' - Reduces calcium ion reabsorption from digested food. PTH does not directly reduce calcium ion reabsorption from digested food. Instead, it acts on the bones, kidneys, and intestines to regulate calcium levels in the blood.
