Protection and Deprotection Reactions in Organic Chemistry

m-Hydroxybenzaldehyde to m-Hydroxybenzoic Acid:
- Protection: The hydroxyl group (-OH) of m-hydroxybenzaldehyde is protected by converting it into an ester using a carboxylic acid anhydride and a catalyst. This reaction is called acetylation.
- Deprotection: The ester group is then deprotected by hydrolysis using an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, which converts it back to the original hydroxyl group as m-hydroxybenzoic acid.

Aniline to p-Bromoaniline:
- Protection: The amino group (-NH2) of aniline is protected by converting it into an amide using a carboxylic acid anhydride and a catalyst. This reaction is called amidation.
- Deprotection: The amide group is then deprotected by hydrolysis using an acidic solution of hydrobromic acid, which converts it back to the original amino group as p-bromoaniline.

Aniline to p-Nitroaniline:
- Protection: The amino group (-NH2) of aniline is protected by converting it into an amide using a carboxylic acid anhydride and a catalyst. This reaction is called amidation.
- Deprotection: The amide group is then deprotected by reduction using a reducing agent such as tin and hydrochloric acid, which converts it back to the original amino group as p-nitroaniline.
