• De-notified tribes (DNTs) are communities that were classified as ‘criminal tribes’ under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871.

• These tribes were notified under the Act as ‘hereditary criminals’, who were supposedly born with criminal tendencies.

• After Independence, the Criminal Tribes Act was repealed in 1952, but the stigma and discrimination against these communities continued.

• In 1952, the government of India issued a notification to de-notify these tribes. However, the stigma and discrimination against these communities continued.

• The National Commission for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (2006) was constituted to look into the socio-economic conditions of these tribes.
