Flow of Water Across a Semipermeable Membrane

1. Hypotonic Solution:

A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solutes compared to the other solution. This movement of water molecules is known as osmosis. The hypertonic solution becomes more diluted, and the hypotonic solution becomes more concentrated.

2. Hypertonic Solution:

When a hypertonic solution and a hypotonic solution are separated by a semipermeable membrane, the water molecules move across the membrane from the hypotonic solution to the hypertonic solution. This movement of water molecules is known as osmosis. The hypertonic solution becomes more concentrated, and the hypotonic solution becomes more diluted.

3. Isotonic Solution:

An isotonic solution has an equal concentration of solutes compared to the other solution. When an isotonic solution and another solution are separated by a semipermeable membrane, there is no net movement of water molecules across the membrane. The concentration of solutes in both solutions remains the same.
