- The given two compounds have the same molecular formula but different arrangements of ligands.
- In [Co(NH₃)₅Br]SO₄, the sulfate ion is coordinated to the cobalt ion and the bromide ion is outside the coordination sphere.
- In [Co(NH₃)₅SO₄]Br, the bromide ion is coordinated to the cobalt ion and the sulfate ion is outside the coordination sphere.
- These isomers are called ionisation isomers because they differ in the way that the ligands and counter-ions are distributed between the coordination sphere and the solvent accessible space.
- The isomers can be distinguished by their chemical and physical properties, such as their solubility and reactivity towards different reagents.
