Advantage of Roasting of Sulphide Ore Before Reduction

Roasting of sulphide ore is a process in which the sulphide ore is heated in the presence of air or oxygen to convert the sulphide ore into oxide. This process is followed by the reduction of the metal oxide to obtain the metal. The advantage of roasting of sulphide ore before reduction are:

a) The ΔGf° of the sulphide is greater than those for CS2 and H2S: The Gibbs free energy change (ΔGf°) of the sulphide is greater than those for CS2 and H2S. Therefore, roasting of sulphide ore is preferred before reduction.

b) The ΔGf° of is negative for roast in g of sulphide ore to oxide: The Gibbs free energy change (ΔGf°) of the roasting process is negative for the conversion of sulphide ore into oxide. Hence, the roasting of sulphide ore to oxide is a thermodynamically feasible process.

c) Roasting of the sulphide to the oxide is thermodynamically feasible: The roasting of sulphide ore to oxide is a thermodynamically feasible process. This process is followed by the reduction of the metal oxide to obtain the metal.

d) Carbon and hydrogen are suitable reducing agents for metal sulphides: This statement is not true. Carbon and hydrogen are not suitable reducing agents for metal sulphides. Further, the standard free energies o f formation o f oxide are much less than those o f SO2. Hence oxidation of metal sulphides to metal oxide is thermodynamically favourable.
