The C4 plants are photosynthetically more efficient than C3 plants because:
  • a)
the CO2 compensation point is more
  • b)
CO2 generated during photorespiration is trapped and recycled through PEP carboxylase
  • c)
the CO2 efflux is not prevented
  • d)
    they have more chloroplasts
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

C4 plants are photosynthetically more efficient than C3 plants because C4 plants contain two types of chloroplast i.e., bundle sheath chloroplast and mesophyll chloroplast. So such plants operate a dicarboxylic acid cycle in addition to the Calvin cycle. CO2, an acceptor molecule (PEP) is present in large bundle sheath cells which has higher efficiency in picking up CO2,. Thus, photosynthesis continues even at low CO2, concentration and the rate of photorespiration is also negligible.

Chloroplasts in C4 Plants:
C4 plants have a unique anatomical and biochemical pathway that allows them to be more photosynthetically efficient compared to C3 plants.

Presence of More Chloroplasts:
One reason for the increased efficiency of C4 plants is that they have more chloroplasts compared to C3 plants. Chloroplasts are the organelles responsible for photosynthesis, and having more of them allows C4 plants to carry out more photosynthetic reactions, leading to higher overall efficiency.

Function of Chloroplasts:
Chloroplasts are where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur, producing ATP and NADPH, which are then used in the Calvin cycle to fix carbon dioxide and produce sugars. Having more chloroplasts means that C4 plants can produce more ATP and NADPH, leading to increased sugar production.

Enhanced Photosynthetic Efficiency:
The increased number of chloroplasts in C4 plants allows them to efficiently capture and utilize light energy for photosynthesis. This results in higher rates of carbon fixation and sugar production, making C4 plants more efficient in converting sunlight into energy compared to C3 plants.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the presence of more chloroplasts in C4 plants plays a crucial role in enhancing their photosynthetic efficiency. This allows C4 plants to thrive in environments with high temperatures and limited water availability, making them more adapted to certain ecological niches compared to C3 plants.
