Calculation of Primary and Secondary Current of a Transformer


Given:

Efficiency (η) = 80%

Power (P) = 4 kW

Primary Voltage (V1) = 100V

Secondary Voltage (V2) = 200V


Formula:

Efficiency (η) = (Output Power / Input Power) x 100%

Output Power (P2) = V2 x I2

Input Power (P1) = V1 x I1


Solution:

Output Power (P2) = V2 x I2 = 200V x I2

Input Power (P1) = V1 x I1 = 100V x I1

Efficiency (η) = (P2 / P1) x 100%

80% = (200V x I2) / (100V x I1) x 100%

80% = 2 x (I2 / I1) x 100%

I2 / I1 = 0.4

I1 = P1 / V1 = 4 kW / 100V = 40A

I2 = I1 x 0.4 = 40A x 0.4 = 16A


Answer:

Primary Current (I1) = 40A

Secondary Current (I2) = 16A
