Which of the following describes the operation of a positive edge-triggered D flip-flop?
  • a)
If both inputs are HIGH, the output will toggle
  • b)
The output will follow the input on the leading edge of the clock
  • c)
When both inputs are LOW, an invalid state exists
  • d)
The input is toggled into the flip-flop on the leading edge of the clock and is passed to the output on the trailing edge of the clock

Which of the following describes the operation of a positive edge-trig...
Operation of a positive edge-triggered D flip-flop:

A positive edge-triggered D flip-flop is a type of sequential logic circuit that stores and outputs data based on the rising edge (leading edge) of a clock signal. The flip-flop has two inputs - a data input (D) and a clock input (CLK), and one output (Q). The operation of a positive edge-triggered D flip-flop can be described as follows:

1. Data Input (D):
- The data input (D) represents the value that we want to store in the flip-flop.
- It can be either a logic HIGH or a logic LOW, denoted as '1' or '0', respectively.

2. Clock Input (CLK):
- The clock input (CLK) is a periodic signal that controls the timing of the flip-flop.
- The flip-flop stores the input data (D) at the rising edge of the clock signal.
- The rising edge is the transition from a logic LOW ('0') to a logic HIGH ('1').

3. Output (Q):
- The output (Q) represents the stored value in the flip-flop.
- It can be either a logic HIGH or a logic LOW, depending on the input data and the clock signal.

4. Operation:
- At every rising edge of the clock signal, the input data (D) is sampled and stored in the flip-flop.
- The output (Q) follows the input (D) only at the leading edge of the clock signal.
- This means that if the input data (D) changes before the rising edge of the clock, the output (Q) will reflect the new input value.
- However, if the input data (D) changes after the rising edge of the clock, the output (Q) will remain unchanged until the next rising edge of the clock.

5. Invalid State:
- When both inputs (D and CLK) are at a logic LOW ('0'), an invalid state exists.
- In this state, the behavior of the flip-flop is undefined, and the output (Q) may be unpredictable.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'B': The output will follow the input on the leading edge of the clock.

Which of the following describes the operation of a positive edge-trig...
Edge-triggered flip-flop means the device will change state during the rising or falling edge of the clock pulse. The main phenomenon of the D flip-flop is that the o/p will follow the i/p when the enable pin is HIGH.
