Diffusion is the net movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. This is also referred to as the movement of a substance down a concentration gradient. In the above experiment region, A solution is more concentrated than B; some molecules of sugar have moved to region B from region A.
This process can not be called osmosis as in osmosis, spontaneous net movement or diffusion of solvent molecules occurs through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water potential to a region of low water potential, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.
