A The terminal velocity of a copper ball of radius 5mm falling through a tank of oil at room temperature is 10cms−1. If the viscosity of oil at room temperature is 0.9kgm−1s−1, the viscous drag force is:
  • a)
    4.23 × 10−6N
  • b)
    8.48 × 10−3N
  • c)
    8.48 × 10−5N
  • d)
    4.23 × 10−3N
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

A The terminal velocity of a copper ball of radius 5mm falling throug...
Given:
Radius of copper ball, r = 5mm = 0.005m
Terminal velocity, v = 10cm/s = 0.1m/s
Viscosity of oil, η = 0.9kg/m.s

To find: Viscous drag force on the copper ball

Formula used:
Viscous drag force = 6πηrv

Calculation:
Radius of copper ball, r = 0.005m
Terminal velocity, v = 0.1m/s
Viscosity of oil, η = 0.9kg/m.s

Viscous drag force = 6πηrv
= 6 × 3.14 × 0.9 × 0.005 × 0.1
= 0.00848 N
≈ 8.48 × 10^-3 N

Therefore, the viscous drag force on the copper ball is 8.48 × 10^-3 N, which is option B.

A The terminal velocity of a copper ball of radius 5mm falling throug...
Given, r = 5mm = 5 × 10−3m Vt = 10cms−1 = 10 × 10−2m−1s
Viscous drag force
F = 6πηrVt
F = 6 × π × 0.9 × 5 × 10−3 × 10 × 10−2
F = 84.78 × 10−4
F = 8.478 × 10−3N
