A liquid of density ρ and coefficient of viscosity η, flows with velocity v through a tube of diameter D. A quantity R = ρVD/ η determines whether the flow will be streamlined or turbulent. R has the dimension of
  • a)
    velocity
  • b)
    acceleration
  • c)
    force
  • d)
    none of these
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Reynolds Number (R)

- Reynolds number (R) is a dimensionless quantity used to predict the flow pattern of a fluid in a particular situation.
- It is defined as the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces and is given by the formula:
R = ρvD/μ
where ρ is the density of the fluid, v is the velocity of the fluid, D is the diameter of the tube, and μ is the coefficient of viscosity of the fluid.
- Reynolds number is named after Osborne Reynolds, who first described this phenomenon in 1883.

Streamlined vs Turbulent Flow

- When the Reynolds number is less than 2000, the flow is said to be laminar or streamlined. In this type of flow, the fluid moves in parallel layers, and there is no mixing of the fluid across the layers. The flow is very smooth and predictable.
- When the Reynolds number is greater than 4000, the flow is said to be turbulent. In this type of flow, the fluid moves in a chaotic manner, and there is a lot of mixing and eddying of the fluid. The flow is very unpredictable and can result in a lot of energy loss and pressure drop.

Dimension of Reynolds Number

- The Reynolds number is a dimensionless quantity, which means it has no units.
- The terms in the formula for Reynolds number have units of density (kg/m³), velocity (m/s), diameter (m), and coefficient of viscosity (Pa·s). When these units cancel out, the resulting quantity is dimensionless.

Answer

- The correct answer is option 'D' - none of these, because Reynolds number is a dimensionless quantity and has no units.
