Extraction of Lead and Tin from their Ores

Lead Extraction:
The extraction of lead from its ore involves the following steps:

1. Concentration: The ore is first crushed and then washed with water to remove impurities.

2. Roasting: The concentrated ore is then roasted in a furnace to convert it into lead oxide.

3. Self-Reduction: The lead oxide is then reduced to metallic lead by heating it with coke in a blast furnace. This process is known as self-reduction.

4. Refining: The crude lead obtained from the blast furnace is then refined to obtain pure lead.

Tin Extraction:
The extraction of tin from its ore involves the following steps:

1. Concentration: The ore is first crushed and then washed with water to remove impurities.

2. Roasting: The concentrated ore is then roasted in a furnace to convert it into tin oxide.

3. Electrolytic Reduction: The tin oxide is then reduced to metallic tin by electrolysis in a molten salt bath.

4. Refining: The crude tin obtained from electrolysis is then refined to obtain pure tin.

Conclusion:
Hence, the methods chiefly used for the extraction of lead and tin from their ores are self-reduction and electrolytic reduction, respectively.
