Consider the following statements with reference to Mahatma Gandhi: ...
To answer this question, let's examine each statement individually:

Statement 1: He established the Natal Congress to improve the rights of Indians against Britishers in South Africa.
This statement is correct. Mahatma Gandhi indeed established the Natal Congress in 1894 in South Africa. The Natal Congress was formed to unite the Indian community and fight for their rights against the discriminatory policies of the British colonial government in South Africa. It played a crucial role in advocating for the civil rights of the Indian community and opposing discriminatory legislation.

Statement 2: He established the first basic school at Barharwa Lakhansen village.
This statement is incorrect. Mahatma Gandhi did establish several schools during his lifetime, but the claim that he established the first basic school at Barharwa Lakhansen village is not accurate. Gandhi's focus on education was primarily centered around promoting primary education and adult literacy. He established schools like the Tolstoy Farm School in South Africa and the Phoenix Settlement in India, but there is no evidence to suggest that Barharwa Lakhansen village was the location of the first basic school established by him.

Statement 3: His biography The Story of My Experiments with Truth 'was translated into Gujarati by Mahadev Desai.
This statement is correct. Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography, "The Story of My Experiments with Truth," was originally written in Gujarati. It was later translated into English by Mahadev Desai, who was one of Gandhi's closest associates and served as his personal secretary. Desai's translation played a significant role in introducing Gandhi's philosophy and life experiences to a wider audience, both in India and around the world.

In conclusion, statement 1 and statement 3 are correct, while statement 2 is incorrect. Therefore, the correct answer is option A, which states that statements 1 and 2 only are correct.

    • In 1913, new laws were passed by the government, which imposed a £3 tax on Indians who had not renewed their indentures. It also removed the validity of marriages that were held as per Indian customs. Gandhi led his followers in non-violent protest. The government arrested him on 6th November 1913.
    • The government appointed a commission to enquire and negotiations were made between Gandhi and Jan Smuts of the South African Government, which led to the passing of the Indian Relief Act of 1914. This led to the tax being abolished and Hindu and Muslim marriages being recognized.
    School established by Gandhi:
    • Gandhi established the first-ever basic school at Barharwa Lakhansen village, 30 km east from the district headquarters at Dhaka, East Champaran, on 13th November 1917 to improve the economic and educational conditions of the people. So, statement 2 is correct.
The Story of My Experiments with Truth:
    • The Story of My Experiments with Truth is the autobiography of Mohandas K. Gandhi, covering his life from early childhood through to 1921. It was written in weekly instalments and published in his journal Navjivan from 1925 to 1929. It was initiated at the insistence of Swami Anand and other close co-workers of Gandhi, who encouraged him to explain the background of his public campaigns.
    • It was originally written in Gujarati which was translated into English by Mahadev Desai which appeared in instalments in his other journal Young India. So, statement 3 is not correct.
Therefore, the correct answer is (a).
