Causes of River Rejuvenation:
The process of river rejuvenation can take place because of the upliftment or depression of the land or rise and fall in sea level. The following statements explain the positive and negative movements that cause river rejuvenation:
- Positive Movement: A positive movement occurs when there is an uplift of land or a fall in sea level. When the land is uplifted, the river starts eroding its bed and banks at a faster rate. This causes the river to cut deeper into the land, creating steep-sided valleys and gorges. A fall in sea level can also cause the river to erode its bed and banks at a faster rate because the river is no longer constrained by the sea.
- Negative Movement: A negative movement occurs when there is depression of land or a rise in sea level. When the land is depressed, the river starts depositing sediment on its bed and banks, which causes the river to become shallower and wider. A rise in sea level can also cause the river to deposit sediment on its bed and banks because the river is now constrained by the sea.
