Approximately seventy percent of carbon-dioxide absorbed by the blood ...
Transport of carbon dioxide in the blood:
Carbon dioxide is transported in the blood in three main forms: as bicarbonate ions, bound to hemoglobin, and as dissolved gas molecules.

Bicarbonate ions:
- Around 70% of carbon dioxide is transported in the form of bicarbonate ions.
- In the red blood cells, carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid, which then dissociates into bicarbonate ions and hydrogen ions.
- Bicarbonate ions are then transported out of the red blood cells into the plasma in exchange for chloride ions through the chloride shift mechanism.
- This process helps in maintaining the balance of charges in the red blood cells and allows for efficient transport of carbon dioxide.

Bound to hemoglobin:
- Around 20-25% of carbon dioxide is transported bound to hemoglobin.
- Carbon dioxide binds to the amino groups of the globin portion of hemoglobin to form carbaminohemoglobin.
- This form of transport is reversible and occurs mainly in the tissues where carbon dioxide is produced.

Dissolved gas molecules:
- About 5-7% of carbon dioxide is transported in the blood as dissolved gas molecules.
- Carbon dioxide is relatively more soluble in blood plasma compared to oxygen, allowing for a small portion of it to be transported in this form.

Conclusion:
In summary, the majority of carbon dioxide in the blood is transported as bicarbonate ions, which is a crucial mechanism for maintaining the acid-base balance in the body.
