A pivot joint is a type of synovial joint. In pivot joints, the axis of a convex articular surface is parallel with the longitudinal axis of the bone. Two examples of pivot joints in human body are the pivot joint in the neck that allows the head to rotate and the pivot joints between the radius and ulna that rotate your forearm.
The axis is the second cervical vertebra; it has odontoid process about which the atlas rotates. The joint between the atlas and axis is a pivot type of joint. It allows the head turn from side to side.
